NATIONALS 5, METS 3

I have no words to describe the intense hatred I am feeling right now for Aaron Heilman. And my disgust with Willie Randolph not only for putting him into a close game, but for keeping him in way too long. Let's start with the good news though. Claudio Vargas pitched a hell of a game tonight. Six solid innings where he only gave up one run on three hits. Then in the 7th, as the game was tied at 1, Vargas walked a batter and Willie took him out. And put in Heilman. A single, a walk and two more singles later, the Nationals had a 5-1 lead. And the biggest travesty? Since Vargas walked the batter who represented the go-ahead run, Vargas is the one who gets the loss! I've had it with Aaron Heilman. Get rid of him. Or at least don't play him if the margin is any less than 5 runs.

P.S. Now I'm watching Willie's press conference and he's saying that in that situation, he had to let Heilman work through the inning. NO!!!!!!!!

WP: Tim Redding (5-3)
LP: Claudio Vargas (0-1)
S: Jon Rauch (8)

Okay, pitch count may have been getting up there for Vargas but it looked like a quick hook - especially to replace him with Heilman who seems just as likely to add fuel to a fire as he is to douse it. Nobody can say Mets would have gotten runs two and three if Washington did not get their five - Nats could have played more relaxed up by four than in tie game or up by one - but too often Heilman has let a close game get out of reach. Willie should have known better.
